Lake Atitlan

Wow, enough with the pictures eh? It's too hard to pick just one of two of Lake Atitlan as it's a very beautiful and picturesque place. Most of these are from the dock of the hotel we stayed at called Hotel BambĂș, while one is from the road while we drove. Lake Atitlan, it is worth noting, is completely surrounded by volcanoes - in fact the Lake itself was created long, long ago by a massice volcanic eruption, and is a rediculous depth of something like 1000 feet.

So, Lake Atitlan. We left Xela in the early morning (the date was Feb 20th - a Saturday) and drove south and west out of the mountains towards the lower coast - the climate of which was very much like that of Belize, though less of a jungle (I don't think we ever got that close to sea level). The we turned back east and drove in to Santiago on the lake, where we dropped off our gear and had lunch before heading out to the peace park a short distance away.

  3. Your pics brought back so many fond memories of Lake Atitlan -- when we were there we climbed up and up and up to a small village -- it was about 100 degrees, and we definitely weren't up to the physical challenge, but along the way saw a spectacular view of the lake, of a brick-making operation, and the most quaint village -- the Mayan people there seemed so quietly regal. I especially remember looking through the mist, past the fishing boats & long docks, over the calm water to the mountainous border all around the lake -- it really was spectacular & I'm glad you could witness it! Thanks for the trip down memory lane...
